Hotmail to get ActiveSync support from Monday 30th August 2010

In a significant move, Microsoft have announced that from Monday 30th August they will support the ActiveSync protocol on all Hotmail accounts. This is significant becuase it means that the millions of mobile users out there will finally be able to wave goodbye to the ancient POP protocol, and receive “pushed” email notifications, and full folder sync. Of course in adition to email sync, ActiveSync also supports calendar and contacts sync – something Exchange users, and more recently GoogleMail users already enjoy.

I have been lucky enough to test the new service for the past couple of weeks. It more or less works as it should, once I had sorted out my Live contacts which were a mess! I am finding that push email notifications are a little hit-and-miss, with some emails being pushed, but others not. Hopefully this will all improve following the proper launch.
